Gain the Competitive Edge...

Nearshore vs. Offshore

December, 2005

Paladin exhibited at the Rochester Business Alliance's International Expo on September 29th.

With the terms "Offshore" and "Outsourcing" getting bad press these days, it's no wonder that a new term has emerged:  "Nearshore".  Nearshore has great value for us in  manufacturing and it isn't just a new term being used as a political spin on a controversial subject, here's why:

CORE COMPETENCIES
Outsourcing performed properly,  leverages a companies' core competencies along with those of it's supply chain.  Offshore manufacturing's primary core competency (and hopefully not the only core competency) is low cost labor.  This needs to be balanced against the numerous drawbacks of extending an internal supply chain to another country such as longer transportation times, currency fluctuation and different time zones.  Nearshore manufacturing reduces many of these drawbacks.  For example:

  • Cheaper and quicker transportation of materials
  • Easier travel
  • Same time zone for communications

As a Nearshore country, St. Lucia has the following advantages:

  • Currency pegged to the US dollar
  • Stable and English speaking work force
  • Duty Free import and export of materials and products

ECONOMIC ENHANCEMENT
Nearshore countries are more likely to be consumers of American products.  Raising the standard of living through the injection of jobs into a Nearshore country eventually increases our consumer base.

NATIONAL SECURITY
In general Nearshore countries are better national security risks.  Both relative size and political attitude make most Nearshore countries a better bet in the events of a war or international conflict.

Charity

The American Institute of Philanthropy gives it's highest scores to charities that spend 25% or less on fund-raising.  Paladin is active with charitable giving to various individuals, an  orphanage and the hospital and is grateful to guidance from Sister DeLourdes at St. Jude's Hospital with this effort.  We have recently begun an additional method of community giving and that is through a link with the St. Lucian Department of Human Services and Family Affairs who identifies and recommends children to us who are in need of financial assistance necessary to attend school.  Although school is "free and open to all" in St. Lucia, financial hardship prevents many children from attending due to costs of  mandatory school uniforms, books and supplies, and if living far from school, transportation to and from the site.   If  you or your company would like to help with sponsoring a child's education, please let us know.
